KCs Mark for machinery

Machines that may potentially be harmful, require the KCs Mark (“s” for safety). This is a test mark of the “Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency” (KOSHA) which shows that the machine is tested and approved for safe operation.

The KCs certification system has been in existence since 1981 and from 1987, machinery also became part of the certification in addition to personal protective equipment.

There are two types of KCs certification:

The KCs certification can be separated into two types, which have different certification processes: Certification of Compliance (CoC) and Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Some products that require a safety certification (CoC) include:

Some products, that require a self-declaration (DoC) include:

Here is a brief Video about the KCs certification (KOSHA) for product exports to Korea,

Machines with explosion-proof capabilities, that are used in hazardous zones, usually also require a KCs Mark certification. It can also be the case that a certain explosion-proof component, that are part of a machine, have to get a separate certification on top of a certification for the whole machine. It is highly recommended for machine manufacturers and component suppliers to clarify certification requirements in advance, in order to avoid delays at later stages in the certification process.

For this KC Mark there are two groups which have a different process of certification; Certification of Compliance (CoC) and Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

If the process of the machine is potentially harmful (e.g. with a pressure vessel) a Certification of Compliance (CoC) in necessary. As part of the CoC approval an annual factory inspection is necessary.

Products, which are related to safety (e.g. personal protective equipment) are also required to have a KC Certification and a Certification of Compliance (CoC). As part of the CoC approval an annual factory inspection is necessary.

Products, for which there is only a risk of injury when safety-related components fail (e.g. machine tools or industrial robots), require a Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

The KCs certification is normally a manufacturer certification, which is especially understandable when factory audits are required. However, if a KCs CoC certification is required for machines or components from foreign manufacturers, it is also possible to apply for an import certification. This requires the collaboration of the importer and allows for a one-time import of 10 products as a maximum quantity. Under this certification, a factory audit is not required.

Several regulations apply to the safety certification: [Article 34 to 34-4 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act; Article 28 of the Enforcement Decree of the same Act; and Article 58 to 58-8 of the Enforcement Regulations of the same Act].

The following regulations are applied for the self-regulated safety check: [Article 35 to 35-4 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act; Article 28-5 of the Enforcement Decree of the same Act; and Article 60 to 63 of the Enforcement Regulation of the same Act].
