South Korea has proposed revisions to several KGS safety standards covering hydrogen equipment, with the aim of improving regulatory consistency, strengthening safety requirements where necessary, and reducing unnecessary inspection burdens for lower-risk systems. The proposed amendments apply to hydrogen production equipment, water electrolysis systems, stationary fuel cells, and multiple categories of mobile fuel cells used in industrial and transport applications.
The Gas Technology Standards Committee is currently collecting public comments on nine draft revisions, including KGS AH171, AH271, AH371, and AH372 through AH377. The updates are intended to improve the practical application of inspection requirements while aligning the standards more closely with the actual safety risks associated with different types of equipment. Hydrogen equipment usually requires KGS certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Korea.

One of the most significant proposed changes affects hydrogen reforming equipment (AH171) and water electrolysis equipment (AH271). Utility piping and equipment carrying cooling water, air, nitrogen, or similar media would generally be excluded from mandatory inspection, except where they are installed within the same enclosure as regulated equipment. According to the committee, these utility systems present comparatively low safety risks and automatic shutdown functions can maintain safe operation even if utility supplies are interrupted. The revision is expected to allow inspections to focus more effectively on equipment with higher safety significance.
The draft revisions also clarify terminology related to burner operation by distinguishing between “restart” and “re-ignition.” Since gas supply remains isolated during the pre-purge process, the committee concluded that the operating sequence should be classified as a restart rather than a re-ignition, reducing the potential for inconsistent interpretation during inspections.
For stationary fuel cells (AH371), the proposal establishes dedicated safety requirements for catalytic burners for the first time. New provisions include mandatory safety shutdown functions if catalyst activation fails, catalyst temperature monitoring, control of fuel and air supply, and maximum standby time requirements. In addition, exhaust system inspection criteria would transition from a bend-count approach to a maximum equivalent length method, providing clearer compliance requirements.
The revisions also cover mobile fuel cells used in forklifts, drones, construction machinery, trams, aircraft, and ships. Oxygen supply piping serving fuel cell stacks and carrying low-pressure, non-hazardous fluids would no longer be subject to pressure resistance and leak testing because of the limited fire and explosion risk. Furthermore, wind resistance testing would be removed for direct methanol fuel cells and direct hydrogen fuel cells, reflecting their structural design without combustion burners.
To improve consistency across the various mobile fuel cell standards, the committee has also revised provisions covering terminology, inspection equipment, electrical wiring, grounding, emergency shutdown controls, and leak detection systems. A formal definition of the lockout concept has been introduced, while emergency shutdown procedures and inspection criteria have been clarified to reduce differences in interpretation between manufacturers and inspection authorities.
The proposed amendments are expected to enhance consistency across Korea’s hydrogen equipment regulatory framework while easing unnecessary compliance obligations for lower-risk equipment. At the same time, the strengthened and clarified requirements are intended to support safer product development, more efficient certification processes, and continued growth of the country’s hydrogen technology sector. The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and South Korea marks its 15th anniversary in 2026. With trade volume most recently reaching around EUR 130 billion, it is considered one of the major success stories of European foreign trade. South Korea is accelerating the adoption of AI-enabled medical products and digital healthcare technologies through a new government investment aimed at improving patient care across regional hospitals. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has announced funding of 12 billion won to support the deployment of AI-based care systems at regional responsible medical institutions, including national university hospitals.
The initiative is designed to strengthen clinical capabilities by introducing practical AI applications that improve diagnosis, emergency response, and hospital efficiency. The investment reflects South Korea’s broader efforts to modernize healthcare services while supporting the safe integration of advanced medical technologies into clinical practice. Other participating institutions will use AI to support the early diagnosis of stroke, dementia, and coronary artery disease, while Kyungpook National University Hospital plans to deploy AI technology that monitors elderly patients to reduce the risk of falls.
Beyond clinical diagnosis, the program also supports AI solutions that reduce administrative workloads. Chonnam National University Hospital, Chungnam National University Hospital, and Chonbuk National University Hospital will introduce AI-powered medical record systems capable of generating clinical notes from voice explanations provided by healthcare professionals. By automating documentation tasks, hospitals aim to allow medical staff to dedicate more time to patient treatment.

The Korean market for MFDS ovulation tests continues to evolve as growing numbers of couples take a more planned approach to pregnancy. Responding to this trend, Dong-A Pharmaceutical has introduced the Echeck Goodnews Ovulation Test, an in vitro diagnostic (IVD) medical device designed to provide a more intuitive indication of the ovulation window through a five-level color scale.
The product measures luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in urine to estimate when ovulation is approaching, helping users identify the most fertile period. Unlike conventional ovulation tests that require users to visually compare the darkness of a test line, the new device incorporates a color chart intended to simplify interpretation. Test results are available within approximately five minutes, and the manufacturer states that the device achieves an accuracy of more than 99% when used according to the instructions. Ovulation test devices usually require MFDS certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Korea.

Ovulation tests are classified as in vitro diagnostic medical devices and play an important role in fertility planning by detecting hormonal changes associated with ovulation. The introduction of a standardized five-level color chart is intended to improve usability by making it easier for consumers to estimate how close they are to ovulation without relying solely on subjective visual interpretation.
According to the manufacturer, reliability can be further enhanced by performing the test at the same time each day, while avoiding the first morning urine sample. Such recommendations are consistent with established testing practices that help produce more consistent results.

The development of AI humanoid welding robots continues to gain momentum as HD Hyundai and its partners expand collaboration on advanced robotic solutions for shipyard operations. The latest initiative highlights ongoing efforts to commercialize intelligent welding systems designed for demanding industrial environments while supporting future manufacturing automation in Korea. HD Hyundai announced that its affiliates, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Robotics, have entered into a partnership with Persona AI, a Houston-based robotics company specializing in humanoid platforms. The agreement builds upon a memorandum of understanding signed in May of the previous year to advance humanoid robots for welding operations in shipyards.
According to the announcement, development work carried out since last year has already produced a prototype that demonstrates promising technical feasibility. The new cooperation assigns specific responsibilities to each participant. HD KSOE will develop robot welding training technologies using operational data collected from shipyards, helping improve the performance of AI-driven welding systems. HD Hyundai Robotics will be responsible for integrating the robotic systems for deployment in industrial environments, while Persona AI will develop a bipedal humanoid platform capable of stable movement across the complex terrain typically found in shipyards.
The long-term objective is the gradual introduction of specialized humanoid welding robots that can perform complex welding tasks at operational shipbuilding facilities.
As development progresses from prototype validation toward commercial implementation, manufacturers must also consider regulatory compliance requirements before placing robotic equipment on the Korean market.
